Tiger Stadium demolition gets under way (AP)

Demolition equipment stands outside Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Monday, June 30, 2008. Crews began the process of tearing down the baseball stadium Monday; most of the demolition work involved the removal of trash and other debris from the interior of the ballpark. An Aug. 1 deadline still stands for a nonprofit group seeking to raise enough money to save part of the stadium.

Crews began the process of tearing down historic Tiger Stadium on Monday. At least one hole was punched in the side of the stadium, which closed following the 1999 season. A back-hoe could be seen removing trash and other debris from the interior of the old ballpark. A handful of fans stopped by the site to watch the work.

Loretta lifts Astros past Red Sox 3-2

Mark Loretta had a pinch-hit, RBI single in the eighth inning off Hideki Okajima on Sunday to lift the Houston Astros to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Loretta, who played for Boston in 2006, batted for Doug Brocail (4-3), who earned a victory in relief for the second straight night.

Jose Valverde shut out the Red Sox in the ninth to earn his 21st save as the Astros took two of three from the Red Sox in Boston’s first series in Houston.

The Detroit Tigers placed right fielder Magglio Ordonez on the 15-day disabled list with a pulled muscle in his right side on Sunday. Ordonez pulled his oblique muscle in the third inning of a 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night. Ordonez is hitting .307 with 12 home runs and 50 RBI. No hits, one run — and a win for the Los Angeles Dodgers. After watching his team beat the Angels 1-0 without getting a hit Saturday night, manager Joe Torre couldn’t recall a stranger game in his managerial career. “That’s about as bizarre as you can get,” Torre said. Jered Weaver threw six no-hit innings and Jose Arredondo held the Dodgers hitless in the seventh and eighth.
