The ditch at the front of the mound really didn’t bother Matt Garza. What made him cringe were two leadoff walks, a three-run fourth and his inability to help Tampa Bay complete a sweep against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday in their division series. Garza and the Rays were a bit out of sorts in a 5-3 loss that forced Game 4 on Monday.

Big payday awaits free agent Sabathia (AP)
Let the race for the ace begin. But don’t think a truck full of money will be the top factor in where CC Sabathia decides to sign. After the Brewers were bumped out of the NL playoffs Sunday with a 6-2 loss to Philadelphia, the free-agent-to-be said that happiness, not money, will play a major role. White Sox win 5-3, cut Rays’ lead to 2-1 (AP)

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Matt Thornton bumps fists with Tampa Bay Rays' Willy Aybar (16) after a collision on the first-base line in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the American League division baseball series Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, in Chicago. The White Sox won 5-3. Tampa Bay leads the series 2-1.

Thanks to John Danks and the White Sox, Chicago still has one team standing. For the second time in less than a week, Danks pitched a strong game to save the season as the White Sox beat Tampa Bay 5-3 Sunday and trimmed the Rays’ lead in the opening-round AL playoff series to 2-1. “If Danks loses in either game he pitches, we’re not here right now,” manager Ozzie Guillen said.
