Chicago White Sox's Nick Swisher follows through on an RBI single during the fifth inning the White Sox's 13-5 win over the Seattle Mariners in a baseball game in Chicago, Monday, Aug. 18, 2008.

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said he thinks the AL Rookie of the Year is on his team. He’s reserving judgment on whether a White Sox player should also win the MVP award. Rookie Alexei Ramirez hit a three-run home run and Carlos Quentin hit his major league-leading 35th home run in the eighth to help the Chicago White Sox beat the dismal Seattle Mariners 13-5 on Monday night.

Lester, Bay lead BoSox by Orioles 6-3 (AP)

Boston Red Sox's Jason Bay, right, celebrates his two-run home run with David Ortiz (34) during the eighth inning of a baseball game against the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, in Baltimore. Boston won 6-3.

Before he came to the Boston Red Sox, Jason Bay didn’t know much about Jon Lester. Bay likes what he’s seen. And, to be sure, the Red Sox are also pretty pleased about what they’ve witnessed thus far from their new left fielder. Lester outpitched Jeremy Guthrie, and Bay homered twice and drove in four runs to help Boston beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 on Monday night.

Braves pitcher Tom Glavine is scheduled to be examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews in Alabama, a visit that is expected to determine whether the pitcher’s stellar career is over. Glavine, out for the rest of the season with a torn flexor tendon, reiterated Monday what he said after going on the disabled list last week: Andrews’ diagnosis will likely determine his fate in baseball.

Gary Sheffield moved into familiar company with career homer No. 493. Sheffield hit a two-run drive in Detroit’s four-run seventh, Curtis Granderson added two triples and four RBIs and the Tigers held on for an 8-7 victory over the Texas Rangers on Monday night. Sheffield went 3-for-5, scored two runs and tied New York Yankees Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 25th on the career home run…

Pirates end Mets’ winning streak at 6 (AP)

New York Mets relief pitcher Duaner Sanchez signals to the bench that he is alright after falling down backing up a throw that went wide of third base in the eighth inning of the baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh, Monday, Aug. 18, 2008. The Pirates won 5-2.

Steve Pearce was coming to bat against the New York Mets with the bases loaded in a tie game, and Pittsburgh teammate Jack Wilson wanted to have a word with the rookie. “I reminded him he’s been in that situation before,” Wilson said. “It’s important for young guys to know they can come up big in those situations.” Pearce again delivered against the Mets, hitting a go-ahead single in the eighth…

Upton’s gaffe puts damper on Rays’ win (AP)

Los Angeles Angels' Garret Anderson races home to score on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Juan Rivera off Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Andy Sonnanstine during a baseball game Monday Aug. 18, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Anderson extended his hitting streak to 21 games, but the Rays won 6-4.

B.J. Upton slipped away from Tropicana Field without speaking to reporters, leaving others to answer questions about another baserunning gaffe that overshadowed a big Tampa Bay victory. The first-place Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 Monday night, but the postgame buzz was more about Upton getting caught jogging on the bases again instead of the AL East leaders improving to 5-2 against the…
